Creative Devotional Ideas

In today’s busy world being able to devote time to God can be a challenge, unfortunately. Just the other day while attending my women’s ministry meeting, several women said that it can be a struggle being able to focus with all of the responsibilities they have in life weighing heavy on their mind. Just this morning, I found myself in a similar situation during my devotional where it was a struggle to keep my mind focused.

Having a “creative” devotional will help you with keeping your focus. Here are some creative ways to spend devotional time with God that I think would be great for you.

  • The SOAP Bible study method

– Scripture: After reading write out one verse that was meaningful to you.

– Observation: what was meaningful in the passage? What did you learn? What was God saying to you?

-Application: How can you apply this scripture to your life? How will you let it change you?

-Prayer: respond to God in prayer, use the scripture as a guide. Ask God to help you meditate and apply the scripture to your life.

  • The REST method:

Here is a ten-day challenge from Kaylene Yoder to help with this method.

-Read

-Engage

-Savor

-Take charge

  • Reading Plans: use a Bible reading plan to read the Word daily.

Creating a Bible reading plan is great for people like me who utilize lists. Here are some of my Bible reading plans that I created for my devotional time; Daily reading plan,  Summer plan, and Fall plan. Having a reading plan helps me to really focus in on what I’m reading. It also allows time for me to gain an understanding of the Word much better. This works great with both the SOAP and REST methods, as they challenge you to go deeper into your reading.

  • Create a “Prayer Challenge”

A prayer challenge is simply a prayer plan you create for an entire month. To start off, you may want to plan out a prayer plan for a week and see how it goes. Then create one for a month using your results from that one week to guide you.

With a prayer challenge, you are simply assigning a specific point of interest/need to pray for each day. Here is a great example of one I found on Pinterest. You could even use this to get you started as a guide for your own personal prayer plan.

  • Bible Journaling

Here are two ways you can journal your Bible

Use a Bible journal/notebook to write your scripture notes in. This is a great way to document your observations, applications, and prayers when using the SOAP method. You could even use this journal as a way to express your thoughts/feelings about the Word creatively through art, poetry, or song.

Use a journaling Bible. A journaling Bible is a Bible with 2-inch ruled margins for writing observations, reflections, prayers, sermon notes, and journal entries. Here is the Journaling Bible I have for myself. It is pre-filled with 500 already illustrated pages that are great for motivating creativity.

  • Pinterest for Prayers

When my prayers started becoming disengaging, I went to Pinterest to find prayers to add to my devotional time. Here is the link to my Prayer Board.

I categorized the prayers based on my time and day of devotion. On Sunday and Thursday, my prayers are free of asking and full of giving thanks and praise. So some of the prayers I only say the parts praising God or giving Him thanks and exclude the rest of the prayer.

With these Pinterest prayers, I get to pray for and about things I would have normally omitted from my own personal prayers. They are also not used as a substitute for me actually speaking to God from my own heart. I only use these during devotional time. I say my own prayers every other time I pray.
