how to conquer worry

How To Conquer Worry

No matter how strong our faith is, we often times find ourselves worrying. The good thing is, when you rely on God, there is no need for worry.

I know, I know, it seems easier said than done. I have found myself worrying about something, get that sudden reminder that I already gave it to God and have to ask myself why am I worrying about it.

The why is simple, we’re human. We make mistakes. What counts is knowing that you don’t have to worry because God has your back. He has already taken care of that situation. So what do you need to conquer those worries that keep catching you off guard?

#1. Put Your Focus On God

It’s so easy for us to worry when we put ourselves as the focal point in our situations. In actuality,  our life circumstances have nothing to do with us.

Instead of thinking why me, focus on why God? God is in control of your circumstances. He has the power. He also knows why you are going through your situation because he knows the bigger picture.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

#2. Be Present

Live in the moment. You are not a psychic, and even if you were, always thinking about the future only steals away your present. You spend so much time anticipating what’s to come (which is often filled with negative thoughts) you miss out on all of the magical moments happening in your life right now.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:25-34

#3. Pray

There is no better way to give your worries to God, than through prayer. Talk to God about what worries you, give your worries to Him, and ask Him for guidance on what to do next.

I love being able to just talk to God as my BFF. I get a calming sensation whenever I fully surrender my worries to Him, and I know for a sure that whatever he does is according to His will.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

#4. Believe

Believe in God’s plan for your life. After all, God is the author of your life story. I think He should have some idea of what’s best for you. This also means, that even when things aren’t working out according to your plan, if you are living your life in obedience to God, then things are going according to His will. This goes back to #1. Put your focus on God. Your will for your life has nothing to do with you. Your will has to do with how you impact the lives of others and following God’s plan for your life.

When you believe in God’s plan for your life, there is nothing you’ll need to worry about and everything to be thankful for.

Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. Psalm 55:22

#5. Trust In The Lord

If you believe that God’s got you, why is it still so hard to trust Him? Just because you feel like things are out of control doesn’t mean that God is not in control. You just aren’t. But guess what, that’s just the way God wants it. God wants you to trust Him and give Him total control of your life, your situations, your worries. Remember He is the author of the story of your life. He wrote your life story thousands of lifetimes before your ancestors were even created. Let’s give God some credit! He knows where you need to go before you even realize you want to go there. He knows what decisions you need to make even before you’re given the options. Therefore, He knows what is best for your life even if it’s not what you had in mind.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path. Proverbs 3:5-6

Now that you know what it takes to conquer your worries, it’s time for you to LISTEN. But, in order to hear from God, you must develop a relationship with Him. God wants to be your BFF too!

Speak with God on a regular basis, anytime, anywhere, anyplace. Have those deep meaningful conversations with Him. Ask Him those tough questions. Meditate on His word daily. And spend silent time with Him so you can hear Him speak to you. But remember, He is God, so don’t go expecting Him to answer you when you want Him to. Trust and believe that He will answer you on His time, and in His way!
