The Daniel Fast

The Daniel Fast

This August I decided to partake in the Daniel Fast once again. It had been ten years since I did the Daniel Fast and felt it was definitely time to revisit this fast.

As I worked to strengthen my relationship with God, I still felt as though there was a disconnect when it came to communication.  I had so many goals for 2018, plans to enhance my life, and just wasn’t where I expected to be in the eighth month of the year. Thus, I decided to fast to work on my ability to understand God better and get my life in order.

The Daniel Fast is based on Daniel’s experience as stated in the book of Daniel. It’s a twenty-one day fast where you eliminate meats, sweets, and dairy. So pretty much, you are allowed to get natural foods that grow as Daniel only ate vegetables and drank water.

So What Can You Eat?

  • All fruit – fresh, frozen, dried, juiced, or canned (without sugar and preservatives).
  • All vegetables – fresh, frozen, dried, juiced, or canned (without sugar and preservatives).
  • All whole grains – amaranth, barley, brown rice, oats, quinoa, millet, and whole wheat.
  • All nuts & seeds – almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds, nut butters (peanut, almond); all unsweetened and without preservatives and butter.
  • All legumes – canned or dried; black beans, black-eyed peas, cannellini beans, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), great northern beans, kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans, and split peas.
  • All quality oils – avocado, coconut, grapeseed, olive, peanut, sesame, and walnut.
  • Beverages– distilled water, filtered water, and spring water (some allow 100% juice (fruit and water only)).

Overall, I felt as though I was on a cleansing diet. Eating all natural veggies and fruits really helped to detox my mind and body. I think I will start to partake in the Daniel Fast once a year, focusing on different spiritual/life goals.
