How to Get Organized; Back to School Edition

It’s our second to last Fix-It-Friday, and once again I can not believe how fast this week has gone.  For this F-I-F, we are looking at ways to get and stay organized for school.  These tips and tricks are sure to make this school year the most stress free school year ever.

Read the School’s Policy Handbook

Most schools will have a copy of their handbook on their website. In this you will find everything about dress code, attendance policy, grading policy, supply list, rules, and procedures. All of those basic questions you have will be answered.

Checklist

This includes what you need to buy, what you need to prepare, appointments to make, meals to plan, etc.  Target will have their back to school sale beginning August 22nd for both school supplies and clothing. It’s super convenient when you can get everything you need from one store.

Create a Morning Routine

For a smooth stress free morning and day, create a morning routine. Having a plan of how your morning will flow will help get everyone out of the door, on time, and without leaving anything/one behind.  I talk more about morning routines here.

Important Dates

Fill in your calendar now with all of the important dates throughout the school year. You will find the school and district’s calendar on the school and/or district’s website.

Color Coordinate

Give each subject a designated color and coordinate your school supplies for each. Get the same colored folders as notebooks. For composition notebooks use duct tape or electrical tape on the binder of the notebook and use a folder of the same color to coordinate. For example, reading – blue notebook and folder, science – red notebook and folder. This way, you and your child will have less chance of getting notebooks mixed up.

Bedtime

Leading up to the first day of school, ease back into the school schedule by slowly going to bed earlier and waking up earlier.  If you wait until the night before, you will surely have a groggy kid on your hands the next morning, and a stressful start to your day.

Homework Time

Before school starts, decide when to allot for homework time. Set that time aside each day to focus on homework. Be consistent to set good habits about doing homework.

Label

If you have a little one or a forgetful one, start labeling all of their things. Use a sharpie or a label maker to put their names in their belongings.
