How To Surrender To God

How To Surrender To God

What if I told you surrendering to God wasn’t that hard? In fact, surrendering to God is the easiest part of the whole surrendering process. The hardest part is the letting go.

Do you agree?

Have you given something to God and found yourself worrying about it less than five minutes later? I know I have. In fact, I just did it yesterday and had to give it to God again. That time I reminded myself it was in God’s hands when the thought popped into my mind again.

Our human minds tend to dwell on things when we are not able to see the resolution instantly. And that is what happens when we surrender to God. We trust Him, we have faith in Him, we completely believe that He is capable of all things. But yet, when we surrender our lives and situations to God, we continue to try and take control of the situation ourselves yearning for that instantaneous resolution.

So how do you truly get to a place where you can surrender to God?

#1. Give It To God

Again, this is probably the easiest step in the process. Give your want, need, problem, etc. to God through prayer.

If it’s about a person, pray for God to bless them and the situation that you are struggling with and tell him you are leaving it in His hands. If it’s about a situation, tell God that you are giving it to Him and leaving it under His control.

There’s no need to go into details about it and get yourself worked up. That will only get you back in the place of worrying. God already knows what/who you are coming to Him for. Keep it simple so it’s easier to LET GO!

#2. Let It Go

And no, this does not have anything to do with the Frozen song. But if that song will help you let it go, then keep singing the song until you feel that you have fully released “it” into God’s power.

Since we are human, “it” may pop up into your mind. Don’t get mad at yourself if this happens. Just go back to God and pray over “it” again. Let God know you are sorry for not trusting Him. Ask for forgiveness, and really leave it in God’s hands.

Sometimes it helps me to make a mental picture of me taking that thing from myself and handing it over to God.

#3. Trust In God

Trusting in God is something we already do. In this case, you are trusting that God has your “it” and He will take care of “it” for you.  This is your sweet reminder whenever that person or situation is near. It’s almost as if you are telling yourself for affirmation that there is no need to even bother about it because God has already taken care of it.

I needed this yesterday when that person that I was having my “it” with arrived. I immediately went into defense mode, heart started racing, I was telling myself to be calm. And then I remembered, God’s got this. He has already taken care of it, even if that person wanted to bring “it” up, I did not need to respond, because “it” wasn’t my problem to handle anymore. “It” was now something that God was handling already.

Trusting God also goes into trusting His timing. You may need to remind yourself that you gave your “it” to God for days, weeks, months, or even years. This will take strength and God’s patience. Just remember that even if you can’t see the resolution you are yearning for, it doesn’t mean that God hasn’t already worked it out for you and will reveal it to you in His timing.

#4. Thank God

This step is actually something you should have done throughout steps 1 – 3.

After giving your “it” to God, thank Him for already working it out for your good.

After letting “it” go, thank God for relieving you from that person or situation.

After reminding yourself through trust, thank God for keeping you.

So now that you know what it takes to surrender to God, I charge you to put this to work today!

Here is a great daily prayer I found after writing this week that I know will help you with surrendering to God.

Heavenly Father, I release to yo the burdens that I have been carrying, burdens that You never intended for me to carry. I cast all my cares upon You __all my worries, all my fears. You have told me to not be anxious about anything, but rather to bring everything to You in prayer and thankfulness.

Father, calm my restless spirit, quiet my anxious heart, still my troubling thoughts with the assurance that You are in control. I let go of my grip upon the things I have been hanging onto, with opened hands I come to You. I release to Your will all that I am trying to manipulate; I release to Your authority all that I am trying to control; I release to Your timing all that I have been striving to make happen.

I thank You for Your promise to sustain me, preserve me, and guard all that I have entrusted to Your keeping. Protect my heart and mind with Your peace, the peace that passes all understanding. Father, may Your will be done in my life, in Your time, and in Your way.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!
