What 2020 Taught Me

h

2020 was not the best year for everyone. Most of us had to make sacrifices, some of us suffered great loss(es), and the entire world tried to figure out the best way to stop a pandemic.

Throughout the first phase of the pandemic hitting us in America, I made sure that I tried to continue to see the good in all things. That was my motto to get through the unknowns of the Coronavirus, and the uncertainty of what life would look like living during a pandemic. With this motto, I was able to learn many valuable life lessons, reflect on myself as a person, and ultimately grow. The three most important lessons I learned in 2020 were to find joy in the journey God has laid out for me, tomorrow is not promised so live for today, and to see the positive in ALL things.

Finding joy in the journey God has laid out for me

Even when things aren’t going as I had hoped, it is important to still see the joy in that journey.  The best part of the journey is knowing God is still at work. When I put things into perspective that this life is the life God has planned for me, even in the midst of a pandemic, I know that God’s will is the best for me and it’s working for my good. That is reason enough to be joyful and grateful no matter the storm you are facing. With each new day, you are one step closer to where God wants you to be, and that is truly amazing.

Tomorrow is not promised so live for today

2020 also taught me to really take into account that tomorrow is not promised. I know this is something most of us have heard throughout our lives, and yet we continued to put things off for a “better” time. Today is the best time to get it done.  Nike knew what they were doing with the slogan, just do it. Benjamin Franklin said, “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” Hince one of the reasons I applied to and started grad school. I put grad school off for over a decade, in June of 2020, I couldn’t see one valid reason as to why. So, I applied, got accepted, and started taking my first class all within a few weeks.

Think about what is holding you back from living for today and eliminate it.

See the positive in ALL things

I will admit, there was a point in 2020 where I could see myself saying, “this year sucks.” But did it really? Sure, there were some major components of 2020 that were, unimaginable, unthinkable, and even life-shattering, but was it the entire year?

There were more positive things that happened to/for me in 2020 than negative. This outlook shifted, even more, when I made it a point to try and see the positives in every single thing. No positive is too big or too small, a positive is a positive. If you smiled once, that’s a positive, and whatever it was that made you smile is worth holding on to the memory.

Life began to make more sense to me because I was living in a state of being grateful and positive. Your midframe shapes your destiny, by shifting to seeing the positives during a pandemic, I was able to appreciate life and my life to be more specific. There are too many things that we take for granted when everything we have is a gift. Each day of life is a gift, and all of the little moments in each day may be filled with something magical if you choose to see it.
