5 Bad Habits Every Christian Should Quit

Five Bad Habits Every Christian Should Quit

When I think about striving to live my best possible life, I think about how I am living my life as a Christian. I pray daily that I am a walking example of a Christian woman, but what do my actions have to say about that. And when actions come to mind, so do the habits that fall in line to foster those actions. I ask myself are these the habits I need to live my best possible life? Are these the habits God would find pleasing and deserving of living my best life? Are you practicing habits that will please God and bring on your best life?

I’m going to help you out a little. I am sharing my top bad habits every Christian must break.

  1. Not Putting God First

Raise your hand if you are guilty of this bad habit.  I most definitely am. No matter how much I say I’m putting God first, I still find myself forgetting to seek him first so many times. This is also true if you are putting people, activities, or work as a priority in your life, and swap out your time with God for them. Remember, if that person or thing takes you away from God, whether through prayer, bible study, or even church, it’s not what God wants for you. God will never give you something or someone that will take you away from Him.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)

  1. Not Feeding Your Soul

God speaks to us in so many ways. One being through His word. When you read God’s word, you are feeding your soul. When you fail to read God’s word, you are creating a void in your life. As a Christian, we must read God’s word daily, treating it like the manual to our lives.

This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success. (Joshua 1:8)

  1. Not Praying

Just as important as reading God’s word is actually praying and speaking with God. So often we forget to take out quality time to spend with God in prayer. That includes quiet time after prayer to hear God’s response.  I’ve heard that we should pray each day as old as our age. So, if you are 25, take out twenty-five minutes of your day to just pray to God. If you’re 40, take out 40 minutes of your day to devote to prayer.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. (Ephesians 6:18)

  1. Not Treating Our Bodies Like Temples

How many bad habits does this cover? Too many to list. Some of the bad habits we practice that falls under this are eating poorly, not being healthy, smoking, drinking, piercings, tattoos, poor hygiene.  When you do not treat your body like a temple, you are pretty much telling God you are not grateful for the body he gave you.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. (1 Corinthians 6:19)

  1. Grumbling and Complaining

Being ungrateful leads us to grumble and complain. My rule of thought is, don’t complain if you’re not going to do something to fix the problem. Also, think about the non-believers who are watching you. Grumbling and complaining give them the perception that the life of Christianity suck. Why would a non-believer want to convert when all they see in you are your complaining ways. And if a non-believer feels this way, how do you think God feels? Your grumbles and complaints are just your ways of telling God what he’s done for you is not good enough.

Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world (Philippians 2:14-15 )
