How To Create A Peaceful Environment

Having a space that is peaceful is a sure way to maintain happiness.

Creating a peaceful environment, whether at work or at home, is easier than you may think.

Think about your environment. What do you see? How does the space make you feel?

Whether I’m at home or at work, the two places I spend the most time, I want the environment to be peaceful.

There are some easy steps I take to create a peaceful, relaxing environment for me to function in.

#1. Declutter

Having a cluttered environment is known for causing stress and anxiety. When your space is free of clutter, you tend to feel free.

Go through your entire space and get rid of anything that you haven’t used in six to twelve months. If it’s a seasonal item, get rid of it if you did not use it for one or two previous seasons.

Another thing you can do to help declutter is to use the KonMari Method. Hold an item in your hands, if it doesn’t bring you joy, get rid of it.

When sorting through your things, put them in piles. One for trash, one for donations, and one for keeping.

#2. Organization

Having your belongings nice and organized will also help to create a peaceful environment. If you’re a visual person, it will also help to use cute decorative baskets and bins to keep some of your items in on shelves and in bookcases.

Having a place for everything relieves stress and creates ease when in preparation mode. It also makes cleaning quick and more enjoyable.

#3. Color Therapy

Yes, there is such a thing.

Take notice of the colors in your space that are causing anxiety, depression, sadness, and/or stress.

Believe it or not, there are certain colors which cause anger and aggression (reds & oranges), while other colors cause calmness and love (blues, greens, pinks).

See what colors negatively trigger you and replace those colors with colors that will help to keep you calm.

This doesn’t mean you have to completely eliminate those colors, you do want to have a balance after all. You can just have pops of that trigger color in your space in a small way that won’t trigger the mind.

#4. Aromatherapy

Scent is another factor that plays a major role in how you feel about a space.

Smells are associated with memories and can trigger certain moods.  Some scents also promote relaxation.

Think about what smells are comforting to you and add them to your space.

I love the smell of vanilla all year long. It is such a comforting smell to me, it causes me to relax.

#5. Sound Therapy

I’m all about playing relaxing music to help me get into a calm state. I also play, relaxing yet brain stimulating music when I can’t concentrate on work and to help set the tone in my classroom.

There are a bunch of videos on YouTube with a variety to pick from that will give you hours of relaxation.
