What I Did To Beat My Anxiety Caused Insomnia

I hear so many of my friends complaining about not being able to fall asleep at night because of their insomnia. So many of us suffer from insomnia as a result of our anxiety, and yet it seems as though we are still one in a million trying to figure out simply how to sleep.

This past year, I finally beat my anxiety-caused insomnia and wanted to share with you these simple steps I took to be able to fall asleep at night.

Yoga

Doing yoga right before getting in bed has been such a lifesaver. I’ve shared this with you guys in my night routines. I found Yoga with Adriene on YouTube and fell in love with her Wind Down Yoga routine. It’s so simple to do and only takes about 12 minutes.

Doing yoga right before bed really helped me to calm my nerves, thoughts, and stress, and prepared me mentally for sleep. The subtle stretches and breathing technique really put me in the right headspace for relaxation, not only for bed but for the next day ahead.

Prayers For Anxiety

If you’re following me on Pinterest, you’ve probably seen that I have a board for Prayers. Within that board, I have a section of prayers specifically for bedtime. I have pinned prayers to help me relax and have an anxious-free night of sleep that I go through and pray every night. These prayers are just great at getting my mind where it needs to be spiritually before I go to sleep. I will go through these prayers right after reading my scripture for my nightly devotion.

Calm

I can’t remember how I stumbled upon the Calm app, but I am sure glad I did. I started using the Sleep Stories to help me fall asleep at night and found myself knocked out within a quarter of the story. Then I noticed you could change the scenes to set the mood for whatever you needed to stay calm. I started off using the Garden Rain scene and allowed the falling raindrops to relax me while in bed. I loved it so much, I started playing the scene from my computer at work and quickly decided to change the one I used for bed so I wouldn’t fall asleep at work. That was when I switched to Tropical Beach. I have my scene set to play for 8 hours outside the app so when my sleep story ends, the sounds of the scene will continue to play even once I and my phone are sleeping.

Do Not Disturb

One of the other things I did to help me beat my anxiety-caused insomnia was set my phone to do not disturb at 9:30 pm each night. This is something I did a couple of years ago and have been so grateful for doing so ever since. When my phone is set to do not disturb, it’s not only on silent, you don’t get to see your notifications popping on your screen. In case of emergencies, whoever you have saved as your emergency contacts are still able to call and get through to you without any problems.

Changed my Sleep Position

I noticed that I easily fell asleep while lying on the couch and wondered why it happened so quickly. I typically slept on my stomach when in bed, but while on the couch, I was on my back. The first night I tried falling asleep on my back, I don’t think I heard 5 minutes of my sleep story, I fell asleep so fast.
