How To Get Out of A Spiritual Funk
There are times in our lives when our connection with God just isn’t the way it should be. Too many distractions, too many life crises, too much of everything, but God.
The saddest part about being in a spiritual funk is you seldom want to go to God for help when that’s the true reason for the rut in the first place. God wants for us to want for Him. But when we’re in our ruts, we don’t realize that our disconnection is because we keep putting everything before God. We’ve created this disconnect that we are frustrated over. We’ve built our own bridge between us and God and now it’s time to knock it down.
How? How do you get out of this spiritual rut?
Step 1. Take Responsibility
Well, the first step is often the hardest. Taking responsibility. There is no one or anything else you can blame. Your disconnect with God came because of an action you took, a choice you made. Own it, and apologize to God for it and ask for forgiveness.
Step 2. Determine The Cause
We know this spiritual funk we’re in came because of something we did. But, what was it?
Figuring out what it is that got you in this spot will help you figure out the steps you took to lead to this disconnect with God. In doing so, you will know what not to do in the future. You may, probably should decide to eliminate that action from your life altogether. Some people may be fully aware of what it is that caused their spiritual rut, if you don’t, ask God to reveal it to you.
Step 3. Surrender It to God
Notice how God is included in all 3 steps so far. In this step you’re taking that problem, relationship, choice, and/or situation and giving it to God. No matter what it is, good or bad, give it to God and leave it with Him. Think about this, if you would have given it to God from the beginning, would you be in this spiritual funk now? No!
As Christians, we sometimes forget to ask for God’s permission first but are quick to ask for God’s blessing after. I’m guilty of this myself. Something “good” comes along at work and I instantly jump and take it and then ask for God’s blessings. What kind of nonsense is that? And what did I do? I put that thing before God. So even if it is “good” will it work out to be good for me when I didn’t go about it in the right order?
This means, going forward, before making any decisions, you have to give it to God first. Pray about it and wait for his answer before making that decision. If there’s a deadline and you haven’t heard God’s yes, guess what, it’s not His will for you at that time. God doesn’t give us situations or circumstances that cause us to feel rushed.
Step 4. Have Open Communication with God
To maintain a close relationship with God, we have to stay in communication with Him.
This communication includes just talking to Him, not asking for anything. Talk to God like He is your best friend. I literally will just pop up and start talking to God about anything. Have random conversations that are different from prayers.
Of course, prayer is essential, but so is listening. It is so important to be silent so you can hear Him. God’s not a screamer, even though there are times I wish He would just scream at me, lol. NO TISH, THAT IS NOT WHAT I HAVE PLANNED FOR YOUR LIFE! Seriously, prayer is a two-way open communication with God. It’s not just us asking Him for things and saying Amen. Once we say Amen, we need to be in silence to hear His response. We also need to understand that His response may take days, months, or even years. However, God speaks to us in so many ways. So make sure you take time out of each day to not only pray but to also spend quiet time with God.
Read His word. Reading God’s word is so often overlooked as a form of communicating with God. This is our way of getting to know Him and His desires for our lives. God also answers our prayers and questions through His scripture. Make sure you take the time to read The Bible every day. There are so many translations for better understanding. There are so many tools to use on the internet to help with Bible study. Find a reading plan that works for you, a translation that works for you, and read each day.
That’s it! Like I said, the first step is usually the hardest. But following these four steps will get you out of that spiritual funk and help to build and maintain an amazing relationship with God. I promise, having God as your best friend creates such a wonderful bond. It also helps you with knowing that if you backslide again, He will always be right there to give you that helping hand and some forgiveness.
